US Congress: Special Autonomy vs Independence

Hearings on the issue in Papua in the U.S. Congress which was held on September 22, 2010 was initiated by Eni FH Faleomavaega, chairman of the Subcommittee of the U.S. Congress. The hearing invited leaders of Papua as Octavianus Mote, Nicholas Messet, Henkie Rumbewas, Franzalbert Joku, some scholars such as Eben Kirksey, Pieter Drooglever and others and off course Benny Wenda was not considered as a Papuan leader due to the fact that he is only self-proclaimed leader.

They were invited to give such testimony and statements about the circumstances in Papua. These hearings grew into a new round of international discussions on the Papua issue because the U.S. Congress invited the leaders from both sides the pro-independence Papuan and the pro-special autonomy such as Nicholas Messet and Franzalbert Joku of the Independent Group Supporting the Special Autonomous Region of Papua Of Within The Republic Of Indonesia (IGSSARPRI). The U.S. Congress is doing much better approach than UK Parliament because they can get input of Papua from two sides, which will provide objective data supported by evidence that can be justified.

NO PART OF INDONESIA generates as much distorted reporting the western half of New Guinea that has been home to an independence movement since the 1960s. Some sources, mostly outside Indonesia, paint a picture of a closed killing field where the Indonesian army, backed by militia forces, perpetrates genocide against a defenceless people struggling for freedom. Rectifying the past injustice

After several years blogging about Papua, I realise that most of the readers of my blog are human rights activists, academics, government researchers, separatist activists, Indonesian military and intelligence officials,  UK Police officials, Australian officials, well educated Papuans, mining business players, environmentalists, etc. I am only guessing by interpreting thousands comments that came to me. A very usual watchers of Papua.

I want to share my personal feeling while writing  articles in my blog. My first impression is there are so many hatred and threat to me, not only from Papuan separatist groups but also from Indonesia (possibly military). I have a thesis: perpetual conflict will only exist as long as there is no communication, and I can say that there is no real communication between Indonesian government and Papua separatist movement for more than 40 years.

The Free Papua Movement (Organisasi Papua Merdeka or OPM) continues to operate throughout Papua and all of Papua’s major cities have seen violently suppressed riots. The OPM has also kidnapped Western hostages on two occasions, although their targets are mining company employees and Indonesian security personnel, not tourists. Travel permits (surat jalan) are required for travel beyond the major cities; they can be obtained at Jayapura and Biak. Some parts are off-limits to all visitors and journalists of any stripe are not welcome.
Large saltwater crocodiles can be encountered in all low-lying waterways and beaches.
